About the Event
We often take for granted our local school district and all it offers to our community. The connection between strong local public schools, a well-educated workforce and a robust local economy is undeniable. Mark your calendars for Thursday, Feb. 28 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Berry Center for a free screening of Backpack Full of Cash, a documentary narrated by Matt Damon highlighting the challenges associated with charter schools moving in and diverting funds away from local school districts. This screening is sponsored by the CFISD Community Leadership Committee, Cy-Fair TSTA and Cy-Fair AFT.
CFISD currently has 15 charter operators and over 20 campuses within its boundaries. According to the Texas Education Agency, area charter schools received $1,765 more per student during the 2017-2018 school year than CFISD. This should be a concern for any property owner, not just parents of school-aged children as the success of CFISD is the single largest factor for strong property values in Cy-Fair.
Panelists Thomas Ratliff, William Gumbert and Lynn Davenport will discuss the impact of charter school expansion on traditional public schools in other large districts in Texas and take questions from attendees.
