Welcome to the first issue of your monthly staff newsletter, Berry Buzz, here to keep you up to date about life at Berry Center. Each issue will include the monthly calendar of events, employee features, a column written by one of the members of our leadership team (it’s my turn this month), birthdays, work anniversaries, notes from our clients, a recipe from the kitchen, written by Mike Owens or Melvin Covington, as well as health and safety tips and fun facts about the facility. The newsletter is one of the many initiatives our leadership team developed in response to the employee survey we conducted last fall.
You all now receive the weekly Tuesday leadership team notes prepared by Christy Aponte. In those meetings we review what happened the previous week and discuss what is upcoming events. In order to provide you with more event information in the future, twice a month we review events up to 90 days in advance. It is also a time for each department to let the group know what is happening in your area, to create a timeline for projects in between events and to share what other departments in CFISD are doing…especially those that could affect us.
At the meeting on Tuesday, we introduced the Berry Center Employee Handbook. We created this employee handbook to improve our training for new employees and to provide you with a how-to reference guide. The handbook also includes CFISD personnel policies and the day-to-day procedures specific to Berry Center, such as how to call in sick, or request tickets to an event. Each department has written how-tos for assembling, building and handling the equipment you use. It is your go-to guide to accomplish tasks. As an example, in the building service crew section, there are specific instructions to set up a concert stage and fold and roll the stage. The handbook will be updated throughout the year so new employees can use it as a study guide and you can use it as a refresher.
It is with great pleasure that I announce that Devon Perry, who joined our team in 2012 as an event coordinator, has been promoted to senior event coordinator. In his new role, Devon is responsible for assigning events and overseeing the coordination of event details, and whenever possible, minimize set up changes. To streamline room requests, receptionist Deanna Avalos has been tasked to provide clerical support to Devon and event coordinator Jasmine Shannon. When a room request is received, Deanna checks the date availability, assigns a space if available and makes sure Devon and Jasmine respond to the client within three days. I am very pleased that event information has been consistently published 7-10 days in advance since September. We will still have some last minutes changes. The nature of our business will always require we be prepared to deal with them as quickly and efficiently as possible.
I am very excited about the performance award program assistant director Brent Buchanan introduced at the meeting. We have been talking about a way to recognize exceptional staff performance since the employee of the month program went away. We hope this program will be meaningful and allow you to collect prizes. Mark your calendar for Wednesday, August 28, 2019 for an all staff meeting to kick off the new school year. We will ask the superintendent of schools, Dr. Henry, to speak and present changes to the district’s policies, look ahead to the new school year, acknowledge staff achievements and present awards for this fiscal year.
I want to close by thanking each of you for your candid comments in the employee survey. I have taken them to heart and am working through to address those that are within my responsibility as the director. For those that are not, my boss, Teresa Hull, CFISD chief of staff, and I have been meeting to discuss to see if the district has a solution for improvement. I feel truly blessed to have a career I love in facility management. It is my goal to provide you will all the resources you need and a positive environment so you can enjoy what you do for a living.
