DIRECTOR'S COLUMN: FEB. 2019

I saw a post on Facebook last week a posting that said “January was a tough year but we made it!” I don’t know about you, but to me, the first month of the new year always seem to take FOREVER to get to the end. (The wild weather didn’t make it any easier either.) We did have some great events including the CFISD Dance Show-Offs on Jan. 19 when we lost power three times due to high winds. The third outage for 30 minutes caused some stress, but I appreciate how everyone rallied around the AV department's alternative solution to get the sound back on. Once again, proving the show must go on!

I always love the National Charity League’s dinner and dance. What a beautiful event. And did you get a chance to catch the opening of TobyMac in concert? The snow effect with clouds created by puffs of CO2 at the B stage made for a dynamic opening. Along with that, we had our first pop-up store during the show in the conference center where the opening acts sold merch.

FEBRUARY

Tony Wood of Texwood Homes, our promoter for the Home and Garden Show, is back for his twelfth year. Tony now holds the record for bringing us the same event for the most consecutive years. His first event was back in March 2008. Tony is always a lot of fun to work with and plays the best music during his event in the arena (in his 20’s he worked at a disco as a DJ).

I am honored and proud that the UIL has chosen again us to host the Wrestling State Tournament. Our unique facility with a conference center and arena under one roof makes us the perfect location with the ability to stage 13 wrestling mats. The Friday opening day is always a challenge for us since we are so short staffed. But in saying that, it does give us the chance to “walk” in other department shoes by working in concessions or taking tickets at a door until our part time staff finish their school jobs.

One final note: I hope you will support Dr. Henry’s mission to raise money for scholarships to graduating high school seniors by signing up to participate in the Superintendent’s Fun Run on Saturday, March 2. Brent will be leading our team for the 5K course that takes you through Towne Lake, Lone Star College-CyFair and back to Berry Center. It will be fun way to spend a morning and support a cause that our BOSS believes in!

Have a great month,

Beth
